Born 1 April 2005, glamour girl Skye is certainly no April fool, how many dogs make their flyball debut at the Summer Champs, after a handful of training sessions?!
This star of the show ring, who won best puppy bitch at 9 months old at Manchester Champ show and has had numerous best of breed wins at open shows and placings in Champ shows, fell into flyball when older “sister” Floss resumed her racing career with the Owlers in the summer of 2008.
Having had a bit of agility training Skye had no problem going up and down the jumps within about half an hour of us working with her. It was perhaps as well, as with the loss of Kim & Mollie just before the Summer Champs, as the only dog of equivalent speed to fill in, she was fast tracked graduate style, learnt the box in 10 days with daily sessions and debuted in open competition as lead dog in Div 12 at Holt Farm!
Despite being very petite, we couldn’t persuade any judge to give her 13” on the old height system, that is until our final attempt of the year when she made it, however no-one else remains convinced so even under the new rules she still just gets that single inch off.
Despite her glamorous background, Skye loves nothing better than getting "back to nature" squirrel and rabbit chasing, a far cry from the immaculately groomed model that appeared on the cover of Dogs Monthly in July 2006, having been snapped by a photographer at Malvern Champ show. As she ended up in third place that day, Sarah thought nothing more of it, until that is, a few weeks later when she passed the Dogs Monthly stand at another show and saw Skye staring back at her!
Although still doing some showing, she now has a permanent role as a speedy member of the ‘Owlers second team, where this versatile little lady can fill any position required! |
